Broomfield Blues

broomfield blues 2017

Palmers Green plays host to one of London's top Blues clubs - St Harmonica's - hosted at the St Monica's Parish Centre. Together with the Vintage Blues Music Association, our sponsor Winkworth, and a host of supporting friends, the Friends of Broomfield Park are delighted to bring you another August full of the best in Blues.

Broomfield Blues is our annual celebration and showcase of what can be found every Friday evening at St Harmonica's. Each Sunday afternoon during August come along, eat, drink and listen to three hours of some of the best Blues music London has to offer.

If you like what you hear all we ask is that you acknowledge that by contributing to the collection "hat", either when it does the rounds, or via the Control site

Local charities will be present offering teas & coffee and we have a very fine ice cream stall and bar.

Each afternoon is preceded by a one hour "open mic'' session at 1:30 offering a stage to up and coming as well as experienced performers. Do support them.

Open mic registration requests via: www.thevintage.org.uk

Week 1- Sunday 6th August 2017: Slide & Steel

Three of the most accomplished slide guitar players in the UK will kick-off the 2017 Blues season on the Broomfield Bandstand following the introductory open-mic sessions,

1:30 -2:30 OPEN MIC SESSIONS

2:30 - 3:10 GRAHAM HINE

The slide guitarist with the legendary Brett Marvin and the Thunderbolts Graham is also a consummate solo performer and song writer of the highest order. Playing a Dobro guitar that Eric Clapton tried to buy off him in the seventies this is the authentic sound.

3:15 - 4:00 BJ COLE & JOE PAPA

B.J. Cole is is regarded as one of the world's pre-eminent pedal steel guitarists and as a live and session musician has played with just about everyone there is. Today he joins forces with his collaborator of many years, Joe Papa, to bring you Country Blues and Rock 'n Roll as it should be played.

4.15 - 5.30 THE CUSTOMTONES

Martin Fieber, the 'Sultan of Slide' is perhaps the UK's best kept slide secret. He brings his hugely talented band 'The Customtones', one of the finest, and tightest, units around to Broomfield. Martin is not known as the Sultan of Slide for nothing, he makes all his own guitars under his 'Customtone' label and the tone and the sound he achieves is staggering; some of his original material is equally wonderful. The rest of the band are all masters of their instruments with Mick Parker on drums, Terry Duggan on bass and Steve Taylor on keyboards.

(All timings approximate.)

Week 2 - Sunday 13th August 2017: Harmonica Blues

Harmonica led Blues at its absolute finest. The country Blues of Paul Lamb and the Chicago Blues of Doc K's Band

1:30 - 2.30 OPEN MIC SESSIONS

2:30 - 3:30 PAUL LAMB & CHAD STRENTZ

Paul Lamb is the probably finest harmonica player in the UK and possible in Europe. With his band the Kingsnakes he has toured just about everywhere. Today he teams up with Chad Strentz, possibly the coolest man on the planet, to play their internationally acclaimed acoustic set. You won't see a better exponent of the harmonica

3:45 - 5:30 DOC K'S BLUES BAND

Doc K's Blues Band have been performing for almost half a century. Just like Trigger's broom they have seen some changes... but it is still Doc K's Blues Band.

Featuring Tim Hill's stellar harmonica work they may just be the finest purveyors of Chicago Blues in the capital.

(All timings approximate.)

Week 3 - Sunday 20th August 2017: Festival Blues

Two of the UK's finest festival acts, perfect for an August afternoon.

1:30 - 2.30 OPEN MIC SESSIONS

2:30 - 3:30 THE HILL STREET BLUES BAND

The Hill Street Blues Band are St Alban's finest with the musicianship, repertoire and banter to grace any festival stage. Nick Holland plays a mean harmonica while Paul Hilder is an outstanding guitarist, vocalist and front man.

The perfect music for a relaxed, chilled summer's afternoon in the park.

3:45 - 5:30 BORN HEALER

Born Healer are one of those bands who have played almost every blues festival in the UK. With a terrific set list of original and cover material they are fronted by Helen Turner, one of the finest vocalists on the Blues scene.

(All timings approximate.)

Week 4 - Sunday 27th August 2017: Blues Old & New

1:30 -2:30 OPEN MIC SESSIONS

2:30 - 3:00 THE LOW DOWN DOGS & FRIENDS

The Low Down Dogs provide the 'Old' with acoustic and electric blues that meanders from the Mississippi Delta via Memphis and Chicago to the New River Delta!

Mad Dog Dave Barnes possesses the best Blues voice in the business with a band to match comprising Vintage players John Crowther, Dave Thomas and Pete Abernethy on drums. They'll be joined by a number of friends from St Harmonica's Blues Club and beyond including Professor Redhair so anything could happen, and probably will

A flavour of Friday evenings from one of London's top Blues Clubs.

3:00 - 5:30 THE BLUES CHAPTER

The Blues Chapter are possibly the finest young (under 40) blues band around. A veritable explosion of talent they know how to tear up a stage better than some of those gnarled veterans of the scene.

They provide the 'New' with a set containing original material as well as some searing Texas Blues reminiscent of SRV at his best.
