Broomfield Blues

Bandstand, Broomfield Park (Show on Map)

broomfield blues 2018

Palmers Green plays host to one of London’s top Blues clubs – St Harmonica’s, hosted at the St Monica’s Parish Centre, nominated as Best Blues Venue in the UK Blues Forum’s annual awards. Together with the Vintage Blues Music Association, our sponsor Winkworth, and a host of supportng friends, the Friends of Broomfield Park are delighted to bring you another August full of the best in Blues.

Broomfield Blues is our annual celebration and showcase of what can be found every Friday evening at St Harmonica’s. Each Sunday afernoon during August come along, eat, drink and listen to three hours of some of the best Blues music London has to offer.

If you like what you hear all we ask is that you acknowledge that by contributng to the collecton “hat”, either when it does the rounds, or via the Control site.

Local charites will be present offering teas & coffee and we have a very fine ice cream stall, a terrific bar and glorious food served by 90 On The Green.

More details of everything can be found in this downloadable flyer, also kindly funded by our sponsor, Winkworth. Read, enjoy and come along to as many of the four concerts as you can. Unless the weather is absolutely impossible we will certainly be there each Sunday.

Each afternoon is preceded by a one hour “open mic” session at 1:30, offering a stage to up and coming as well as experienced performers. Do support them.

Open mic registraton requests via: www.thevintage.org.uk

Tickets: Free

Week 1 - Sunday 5th August 2018: Women Sing The Blues

Two absolutely top drawer bands kick-off the 2018 Blues season on the Broomfield Bandstand following the introductory open-mic sessions.

1:30 - 2:30 OPEN MIC SESSIONS

2:30 – 3:45 HOUSE RED

The powerful vocals of Chrissie Thomas have been likened to Otilie Paterson. House Red consists of the house band from the award nominated St Harmonica's Blues Club with John Crowther on guitar, Simon Bennet on keyboards, Les Cole on drums and Dave Thomas on bass. A vintage and eclectic blend of rocking and soulful blues.

4.00– 5.30 BIG MAMMA’S DOOR

Fronted by the irrepressible Fiona McEllroy, this band swings like nothing you’ve seen at the park before. A dazzling combination of power and swing. Fiona doesn’t get back from Ireland as often as she used to, so you need to catch this band whenever you can. Make sure you bring your dancing shoes.

Week 2 - Sunday 12th August 2018: Slide Them Blues

Two of the finest entertainers on the Blues circuit to guarantee your entertainment

1:30 - 2:30 OPEN MIC SESSIONS

2:30 – 3:45 JIMMY C & THE BLUES DRAGONS

One of the nicest guys on the circuit, Jimmy always seems to have a smile on his face. One of London's most entertaining and hard-working Blues bands, these guys are a hit wherever they play with a repertoire that includes Blues classics from Robert Johnson and T Bone Walker, through Albert, Freddie & BB King to the British Blues explosion including Cream and the Rolling Stones. Their mission is to entertain and get you dancing. Check out some of the comments: www.bluesdragons.com.

4:00 – 5:30 THE CUSTOMTONES

We make no apologies for bringing the Customtones back to the bandstand. They are just one of our favourite bands of all time. Martin Fieber, the ‘Sultan of Slide’, is perhaps the UK’s best kept slide secret. He brings his hugely talented band ‘The Customtones’, one of the finest, and tightest, units around to Broomfield. Martn is not known as the Sultan of Slide for nothing, he makes all his own guitars under his ‘Customtone’ label and the tone and the sound he achieves is staggering; some of his original material is equally wonderful. The rest of the band are all masters of their instruments with Mick Parker on drums, Terry Duggan on bass and Steve Taylor on keyboards.

Week 3 - Sunday 19th August 2018: Chicago Blues

Following an hour of open mic two bands to provide you with the best Blues in the capital.

1:30 - 2:30 OPEN MIC SESSIONS

2:30 – 3:30 DAWN SANDELLS & THE RAIDERS

Dawn Sandells and the Raiders have rocked some of the biggest festivals here in the UK and abroad. Hailing from Machynlleth in Wales, Dawn has power and presence in spades. The Raiders draw from some of the finest musicians in the UK and together provide a feast you won’t forget.

4:00 – 5:30 DOC K’S BLUES BAND

Probably the finest purveyors of Chicago Blues in the capital. The lineup may have changed over this band’s 50 years, but it remains every bit as good as the original with a ridiculous pedigree. Mad Dog Dave Barnes provides searing vocals and slide guitar in tandem with Tim Hill on harmonica and vocals. The rhythm secton of Mick Parker, drums, and Simon Fowle, bass, keeps it all driving along, but as for the lead guitarist….some say, he cannot be killed by conventonal weapons, such are his powers, the incomparable Malcolm Hine.

Week 4 - Sunday 26th August 2018: Best Blues Ever

1:30 - 2:30 OPEN MIC SESSIONS

2:30 – 3:30 PAUL LAMB & CHAD STRENTZ

Paul Lamb is probably the finest harmonica player in the UK and possibly in Europe. With his band the Kingsnakes he has toured just about everywhere. Today he teams up with Chad Strentz, widely acclaimed as one of Europe’s leading Blues vocalists, to play their internatonally acclaimed acoustic set. You’ll see why these two are award winning musicians.

3:45 – 5:30 THE BLUES CHAPTER & FRIENDS

The Blues Chapter are possibly one of the finest younger blues band around. A veritable explosion of talent they know how to tear up a stage beter than some of those gnarled veterans of the scene. Jesse Thomas on guitar and Sky Wood on vocals with a set containing original material as well as some searing Texas Blues reminiscent of SRV at his best.

They bring the 2018 Broomfield Blues series to a close with a litle help from some of their rather talented friends from St Harmonica’s Blues Club and beyond.
